“It took two months to really hone and craft that scene, with many different writers,” Matalas reveals. “All of us contributed to it, including Patrick [Stewart] and Gates [McFadden] and Jonathan [Frakes, who directed the episode]. We rehearsed it many times. It was the most difficult scene of the season to get right. But it was important to get it right because it’s a pivotal scene for Jean-Luc and Beverly as characters, Matalas notes: “It needs to do quite a bit. You need to understand his point of view, which is, ‘My God, what have you done?’ And her point of view is, ‘What do you expect me to do?’ By the time she’s finished with the explanation, you need to truly understand why she would do that, and I think Gates’ performance is just phenomenal in that scene. It did get “emotional” on the set while filming the scene as well, Matalas recalls: “Both Patrick and Gates have strong feelings about their characters, and it’s not a traditional Star Trek: The Next Generation scene.”
— Terry Matalas, on Picard and Crusher’s pivotal scene in Episode 3

Was anybody gonna tell me Ethan Peck is Gregory Peck’s grandson or was I supposed to find that out on my own?

Alexander Siddig is Malcolm McDowell’s nephew.

Denise Crosby is Bing Crosby’s granddaughter.

Probably a few more I’m forgetting.

Answering some FAQs in the wake of Discovery ending:

  • Season 5 (which is now Discovery’s last) finished filming in November. It was not known at the time that it would be the last season.
  • However! They are apparently going to go back and film more (unknown if just additional scenes, or additional episode/s) which is partly cause of the delay til 2024.
  • The powers that be have continued to claim Section 31 is in development. It has been so for 4 years, since it was announced. During which time Michelle Yeoh’s career has skyrocketed. We have no idea what is happening with it beyond Paramount saying it’s coming.
  • Persistent rumors, and even statements from Alex Kurtzman saying it exists, have indicated a Starfleet Academy based show has also been trapped in development for years.
  • Some have speculated Tilly going to become an academy instructor in last season of Discovery could indicate that is the direction of the show, but that is only speculation.
  • A second season of Strange New Worlds already finished filming. It’s likely to be released following Picard season 3, but we don’t have any official word yet when.
  • Indications from Toronto filming outlets are that SNW season 3 is slated to begin filming soon. No official confirmation from Paramount. Which is standard operating procedure at this point.
  • Lower Decks is also finished with it’s next season. We expect it to release in the summer like the last few years. No confirmation yet of a 5th season. Animated shows are far less expensive, so odds are good in our estimate.
  • Prodigy season 2 is ready, will come out at some point. Theoretically end of 2023, could be 2024 though. It’s received acclaim and is the first show targeted for kids. Likely to continue.

If anyone has any other questions, reply or reblog.

BREAKING: Upcoming 5th Season of Star Trek: Discovery to be it’s last

For everyone who was expecting 7 seasons, I think just like the 26 episodes a season era, 7 seasons are a thing of the past. If you look at even the most successful streaming series, there are very few who get to 7 seasons. This is because of the business model of streaming (cancel quickly + prioritize new shows that bring in new subscriptions) and the long standing contract lengths. As far as I understand (and if anyone knows better, please correct me) the length of a Hollywood series contract is 6 years. There is a renegotiation/exit option at 3 years? But 6 is the standard term Hollywood expects and prepares a successful show to go.

TNG, Voyager and DS9 all had to sign everyone for that extra 7th season, often with pay raises. Jeri Ryan has stated she was prepared to leave after her 3 years, and decided to do season 7 for the significant salary increase because her mother was ill. There was speculation Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew would leave during their negotiations for their 7th years. There was also speculation Patrick Stewart would leave after 3 seasons (Best of Both Worlds) though he’s said he never even considered it.

All this is to say: Discovery ending in 5 seasons is a bit of a surprise (I expected 6) but sadly it is the norm now. In fact, it’s actually an indicator of it’s success that it got 5 seasons. Most streaming series do not get to 5. Many do not get to 4. A generally successful streaming series is 3 seasons at this juncture.
