Nog started off as a minor character, and became such a nuanced and interesting one. Aron Eisenberg acted the part so well. This is one of my favourite of his scenes. Rest in peace
Benjamin Sisko & Julian Bashir Talk About The Political Climate of the Early 2020′s in Past Tense, Part I
Original Dialogue:
SISKO: Don’t be so sure. One of the main complaints against the Sanctuary Districts was overcrowding. It got to the point where they didn’t care how many people were in here. They just wanted to keep them out of sight. BASHIR: And once they were out of sight, what then? I mean, look at this man. There’s no need for that man to live like that. With the right medication, he could lead a full and normal life. SISKO: Maybe in our time. BASHIR: Not just in our time. There are any number of effective treatments for schizophrenia, even in this day and age. They could cure that man now, today, if they gave a damn. SISKO: It’s not that they don’t give a damn, Doctor. It’s that they’ve given up. The social problems they face seem too enormous to deal with. BASHIR: That only makes things worse. Causing people to suffer because you hate them is terrible, but causing people to suffer because you have forgotten how to care? That’s really hard to understand. SISKO: They’ll remember. It’ll take some time and it won’t be easy, but eventually people in this century will remember how to care.
According to data from Brazil’s space agency, deforestation in the world’s largest tropical rainforest totaled 920 sq km (355 sq miles).
The data showing the 88.4% deforestation increase is preliminary, but indicates the official annual figure, based on more detailed imaging and measured for the 12 months to the end of July, is well on track to surpass last year’s figure.
In the first 11 months, deforestation has already reached 4,565 sq km (1,762 sq miles), a 15% increase over the same period in the previous year.
Environmentalists have warned that Bolsonaro’s strong support fordevelopment in the Amazon and criticism of the country’s environmental enforcement agency for handing out too many fines would embolden loggersand ranchers seeking to profit from deforestation.
“ If another 20% of the Amazon were to disappear, that could trigger a feedback loop known as a dieback, in which the forest dries out and burns. Once this dieback starts, the forest would be “beyond the reach of any subsequent human intervention or regret,” according to the Intercept. That would cause the Amazon to devolve into a savannah-like landscape. “
” In June alone, when the cooler, drier season began and cutting trees became easier, the deforestation rate rose drastically, with roughly 80 percent more forest cover lost than in June of last year.
The deforestation of the Amazon is spiking as Mr. Bolsonaro’s government pulls back on enforcement measures like fines, warnings and the seizure or destruction of illegal equipment in protected areas.
A New York Times analysis of public records found that such enforcement actions by Brazil’s main environmental agency fell by 20 percent during the first six months of the year, compared with the same period in 2018. The drop means that vast stretches of the rain forest can be torn down with less resistance from the nation’s authorities.
The two trends — the increase in deforestation and the government’s increasing reluctance to confront illegal activity — is alarming researchers, environmentalists and former officials who contend that Mr. Bolsonaro’s tenure could lead to staggering losses of one of the world’s most important resources.
“We’re facing the risk of runaway deforestation in the Amazon,” eight former environment ministers in Brazil wrote in a joint letter in May, arguing that Brazil needed to strengthen its environmental protection measures, not weaken them.
Mr. Bolsonaro has dismissed the new data on deforestation, calling his own government’s figures “lies” — an assertion experts called baseless. During a gathering with international journalists last week, the president called the preoccupation with the Amazon a form of “environmental psychosis” and argued that its use should not concern outsiders. “
Sansa sat up. “Lady,” she whispered. For a moment it was as if the direwolf was there in the room, looking at her with those golden eyes, sad and knowing. She had been dreaming, she realized. Lady was with her, and they were running together, and … and … trying to remember was like trying to catch the rain with her fingers. The dream faded, and Lady was dead again.
Remembering Michele Rice 47 years after her death, and delving into the symbolism of Claudia.
This is a very sad post, and I have a lot of sympathy for Anne Rice. This is a painful anniversary for her. She’s sharing it with us probably for a lot of reasons but I’m taking it as her telling us, her readers, that she’s survived this devastating loss, we all deal with death, and that maybe others can draw some comfort from the fact that she understands what it’s like to mourn, too. Writing has that power, to show that our experiences are relatable, and that maybe we can help each other heal from wounds that might seem fatal.
So we reach into the raging chaos, and we pluck some small glittering thing, and we cling to it, and tell ourselves it has meaning, and that the world is good, and we are not evil, and we will all go home in the end. - Tale of the Body Thief
…Also, not to derail things (SHE brought it up!) I’m so grateful that Anne took this opportunity to clarify that Louis and Lestat are MARRIED ALREADY so… I think that should settle THAT debate?? Word of God is illegitimate *handwaves* but it’s something more than her dancing around it calling them omnisexual for all these years so…

A neon sign is flashing on and off in a shop window, and from where we are looking, it could almost be a halo above his head, blinking on and off again…"
