JJ Abrams and Paramount Confirms 2023âs STAR TREK Film to Be a Kelvin Timeline Story, Chris Pine and Cast in Talks to Return
By TrekCore Staff - February 15, 2022
Today on Paramountâs investor day announcements this afternoon, Star Trek Kelvin Timeline executive producer JJ Abrams made it clear that the next Trek film â currently scheduled for December 2023 â is going to be a return to his theatrical universe.
While Abramsâ statement referred to only the âoriginal castâ when describing plans for the movie, which he said would be in production by the end of 2022, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Deadline each confirmed that the films is to focus on the Kelvin Timeline crew â seen previously in the 2009 Star Trek film, 2013âs Star Trek Into Darkness, and 2016âs Star Trek Beyond.
JJ Abramsâ statement:
We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new âStar Trekâ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take âStar Trekâ into areas that youâve just never seen before.
Weâre thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that weâre talking about that we think will be really exciting so canât wait for you to see what weâre cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.
Of course weâve heard much of this all before, with an end to the Kelvin Timeline seeming likely after previous financial negotiations with Chris Pine fell apart in 2018 â so while this kind of thing seems like it wouldnât be so publicly discussed if things werenât moving back to fruition, weâll still be waiting for formal news of contract sign-offs.
The untitled 2023Â Star Trek film is set to be directed by Matt Shakman, with todayâs announcement signaling an intention to bring back Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty, and John Cho as Sulu.

2023âs STAR TREK Film Lands a Director, WANDAVISIONâs Matt Shakman; Filming Reportedly Starts Next Spring
By TrekCore Staff
The next Star Trek movie â announced in April for a 2023 release with a surprisingly scarce amount of accompanying information â and today, the famous Bad Robot mystery box seemed to crack open a bit as the director and screenwriters for the upcoming project have been named.
Reported first by Deadline tonightâ and weâve since confirmed the news with Paramount Pictures â 2023âs movie is set to be directed by Matt Shakman, fresh off of his nine-episode run helming the Marvel / Disney+ series WandaVision â a show which nabbed an impressive 23 Emmy Award nominations this morning, including one for Shakmanâs directing work on the series.

In addition to his recent work for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shakmanâs also spent time directing episodes of highly-regarded television series like HBOâs Succession and Game of Thrones, Amazonâs The Boys, and FXâs Fargo, Youâre the Worst, and Itâs Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
The still-untitled Star Trek film, produced by J.J. Abrams, is centered on a script from writers Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet; while Beerâs published credits are mostly for projects still in development or in pre-production, Robertson-Dworetâs credits include Marvel Studiosâ Captain Marvel feature, as well as the 2018 Tomb Raider film.
If produced as reported â and heaven knows these things have fallen apart several times over the last six years â 2023 would be the first Star Trek film written by women.
This would make the 2023 project yet another take on a Star Trek story, after just in March, writer Kalinda Vazquez was tapped to script a Trek film â clearly just not this one.

In addition to the new about the filmâs behind-the-scenes team, Deadlineâs reporting also indicates that the 2023 film is going to move swiftly into production, with filming set to begin as early as next spring⌠a necessity if Paramount Pictures wants to have it in theaters on June 9, 2023.
We still donât have any additional news on the movieâs story, casting, or even what part of the Star Trek multiverse itâll be set in â as Paramountâs keeping a tight lid on the filmâs details, aside from todayâs news â but as more news comes out about this next big-screen adventure, you can be sure weâll bring it to you here at TrekCore.
We donât know yet whether this film, or any others, are AOS or something else. At one point, the original article did say that the hope was for that cast to return but no deals had been signed yet. That was then deleted, which could mean anything.

The difference between TOS Sulu and AOS Sulu is that AOS Sulu would have a really aesthetic social media with pictures of his plants and family where everything is colour coordinated and organised with dividers, and TOS Sulu would have a meme account with badly taken pictures of him and Chekov doing ridiculous things scattered in
