Ira Behr & Andy Robinson Discuss Garak’s Initial Interaction With Bashir from What We Left Behind
Transcript: IRA BEHR: What did Garak think of Bashir? Was—Were they friends? Did they develop a friendship or was he using him the whole time? ANDY ROBINSON: At first he wanted to have sex with him. That’s absolutely clear. That’s all he wanted from him. “Come to my shop, I’ve got some nice clothes for you…but you’ll have to change first.” But then it really got complicated, especially when Garak’s addiction and despair began to surface. He needed someone to share it with.
its always nice when actors say its ok to interpret the character they play as lgbt but ds9 actors are on some galaxy brain shit. are they so devoted to their character being butch that they cut their costume wig into a dyke haircut (which couldn’t be replaced and un-dyked due to zero budget) and fight non-stage makeup every step of the way? did they kiss each other on the lips on film? did they literally write a PLAY with their same gender costar shipping their characters together? i cant get over that last one. if you didnt write at least 30 pages of real irl unpaid literature about your character being in gay love you’re not a real ally
this title makes them sound like jk rowling, with her ādumbledore was gay all along, thatās just that, k ticky boxā and not doing anything else or acknowledging she could have done better
please donāt do that.
letās be clear that andy robinson knew garak was gay/bi from the start, and what ira steven behr said in the documentary was that he feels ds9 didnāt do well enough by the lgbiaq+ community.
he literally said donāt tick that box.
he said they should have taken the opportunity to explore garak canonically coming out as gay(/bi) across multiple episodes.
he is not saying āgarak was gay all alongā, though he is not disputing garakās queerness or trying to shut down andy or the fans, heās acknowledging that canonically officially, garak wasnāt, but should have been.
heās owning up to his mistake (hopefully if heās involved in any future projects, he will make sure to have better queer rep)
