a lot of people on tumblr irrationally hate Black Mirror because they conflate its criticism with the way capitalism uses technology with “durr hburr technology is bad fire is scary and thomas edison was a witch”.
the whole point of black mirror isn’t that technology is bad (they spend entire episodes showing why actually technology can be used in really fantastic ways), it’s exploring horror in a context that we haven’t had the time period to explore yet.
horror isn’t innately bad because it focuses on technology, even if most people who criticize modern technology are Dumb Idiots.
i see lots of people summing Black Mirror up as “ooo iphones are Evil and Scary” to mock it and like. i hate to be the one to break it to you, but like. apple is a bad company that does bad things. iphones ARE evil and scary. so is google. so are lots of other contemporary technology companies.
capitalism isn’t your friend and that’s the overwhelming point of Black Mirror, that lots of technologies companies are super unethical, and that we, as a society, haven’t examined lots of the ways technology is used unethically
with a few exceptions most black mirror episodes fall into the message of either “technology can amplify the worst of human depravity and evil” or “All technology meant for good is a tool of evil in the hands of governments and corporations”
