Eleanor Guthrie + pirate wardrobe

tagged as: Black Sails;  Eleanor Guthrie;  s3 and s4 eleanor feels like a very different person and tbh there's MANY reasons but one of them is the lack of *these* outfits;  they're all iconic and i missed them when she stopped wearing them to wear shitty proper lady clothing :(;

the thing about eleanor (Eleanor As We Knew Her) is that she died at the end of season 2. a symbolic death of being hanged in effigy; a grief-death from her father and everything he wasn’t and everything he suddenly never would be; a home-death as she was removed from the place she lost everything for; a spiritual death of breaking something precious irreparably and many times over.

when we meet eleanor (Eleanor As She Ended) again in season 3, she is a wraith. physically, she is limp and drained of her vitality; there are deep circles under her eyes and a sallowness to her skin that never goes away; her hair is limp and her eyes no longer glitter in the light.

but more importantly, the eleanor we see in season 3 and 4 is a pale imitation of her former self. Eleanor As She Ended has learned her lesson from nassau, but it’s a different lesson from the one we wanted. she puts her love and her soul in the hands of the first person who recognizes her value. she trades independence for the security of marriage. she chooses to relinquish power by trusting that someone else will use it better than her. he does not, and she dies for it.

but she died long before the spanish ever landed on the island. Eleanor As We Knew Her, As Nassau Hated Her, and As Max Loved Her, died the moment she left its shore.

(alternatively: Eleanor the Legend died with hornigold’s betrayal. the woman we see in s3 onwards is Eleanor the Woman, making the hard choices she needs to in order to survive. either way, they are both ghosts by the end of the story, and they suffer the indignity of being trapped as a flattened image of domestic grief in rogers’ head forever).

(alternatively, again: eleanor dies the same kind of spiritual death that john silver and james mcgraw do at the end of season 2. the difference is that silver and flint resurrect each other. in a way that’s horrifying, yes; never quite whole again, yes; but still with spark in them. eleanor doesn’t have anyone to do that; she burned every last bridge she ever had).

tagged as: Black Sails;  Eleanor Guthrie;  black sails meta;  yes yes;  'you were once a pirate' flint tells her and. yeah god she really does become someone who betrays everything she ever stood for;  she was once someone trying to survive making all the wrong choices at every possible turn;  i have a lot of complicated feelings for eleanor;

I do not know which is worse: that [Anne] perish fighting for Jack, or that she survive without him. If it is even truly surviving, losing half of herself this way.

There may be ways of severing oneself in that way, sacrificing one part to save the other. But in that moment, I honestly couldn’t find something sharp enough to make the cut.

I truly am sorry. For all of it.

An intolerable sacrifice.

[Caption: side by side comparison of Eleanor and Max’s fight in s01e02, and Flint and Miranda’s in s01e07. It shows that Flint and Eleanor were partially instigators of the other’s fight; Eleanor’s and Flint’s unwillingness to let go of the work they did for Nassau during years; Max and Miranda telling them that there’s no love to be found within Nassau and offering Eleanor and Flint to leave together; and Eleanor and Flint storming out of the room after Max and Miranda said something hurtful. For further description and to read the dialogue, each gif contains captions.]
