Queer Bookworm: nuspock: I was rewatching “The Empath” and squeeing over the K/S...

nuspock:

I was rewatching “The Empath” and squeeing over the K/S scene, as per usual. You know the one I’m talking about. Spock watches Kirk as he sleeps, then notices that the empath is watching and immediately becomes engrossed by his tricorder. The empath walks over to him and touches his shoulder, sensing his emotions. The softest, most beautiful look spreads across her face as she feels the deep love that Spock has for Kirk. Every K/S fangirl within a 20 mile radius bursts into flame. La di da, nothing new.

But as I watching today, squeeing into my ice cream, I thought for the first time, “Why is Spock choosing this specific moment in time to gaze longingly at Kirk? I mean, I get it, Kirk’s fucking adorable when he sleeps, but Spock’s usually a bit more subtle than that.”

And then I realized I’d replayed that one scene so often that I’d forgotten the context. Spock is intending to hand himself over to be tortured. He was told previously in the episode that the torture would almost definitely kill him or drive him insane.

He’s staring at Kirk, soaking him in, memorizing him, because, as far as he knows, this is the last time that he’ll see the man he loves.

I just

We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted, in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings.
