Ianto + Jack’s coat
One of my favorite things about Jack and Ianto’s relationship was always Ianto’s ability to anticipate and meet Jack’s needs, particularly in regards to Jack’s coat.
There are two more scenes that I couldn’t include here because they were both so subtle that they didn’t lend themselves well to being giffed.
The first is in Combat. Jack is leaning against the door frame of his office when Ianto appears next to him and informs him that there are suspicious injuries at the hospital. Jack begins to walk toward the exit of the Hub before Ianto is even finished speaking, giving out assignments, and telling Ianto to come with him. The next shot focuses on Gwen, but in the background we can see Ianto put down his files and move deeper into Jack’s office. The next time we see him, he is following after Jack with Jack’s coat folded over his arm. Jack was already walking out the door before he told Ianto to come with him to the hospital, and although he was three steps away from his coat rack and could have grabbed it himself, he didn’t. I don’t know if it speaks more to Jack’s personality that he knew Ianto would grab it for him, or Ianto’s that he knew Jack would want his coat and made sure to get it out of his office before they left the Hub.
In the same vein, the second scene is in Dead Man Walking. After Owen expels Death it attacks Jack and kills him. We next see Jack revive alone in the SUV outside the hospital with his coat tucked under his arm (the others have already gone inside with Martha). He hastens to follow his team inside, pulling his coat on as he runs. And if you don’t think it was Ianto who made sure to grab the coat on their way out and tuck it under Jack’s arm so that he could put it on when he woke up, I’m sorry but you’re wrong.
