Of all the things Worf experienced as chief of security of the Enterprise, this was definitely the most traumatic.
#look at his face#he’s like help help HELP HELP PLEASE#keiko o’brien’s life is full of bonus difficulty challenges#having your first baby? ok we should definitely be having a shipwide disaster at that time#don’t worry you’ll get extra points (via mylittleredgirl)
wait are there babies not born during shipwide disasters
Okay, I just saw a post about how “Chief O’Brien can’t stand Dr. Bashir, let’s stick them together in every episode,” and the thought of it just cracked me up, like:
Maybe this is how you work your way into Miles O’Brien’s heart: by repeated, daily abrasion.
Maybe when he met Keiko Ishikawa on the Enterprise—on an ill-fated double-date? Who knows?—she was abrasive as hell and rode his ass about every little thing he did throughout the whole date and finished off by beating his ass at bowling, and when he got home he just shuddered, like, Thank God that’s over, because I cannot stand that woman.
But he kept running into her. Every day. The Enterprise is only so big, after all, and they both kept ending up in Ten-Forward at the same time, or sitting next to each other at concerts, or awkwardly running into each other at the gym, and of course they had the same friends, so he just couldn’t get away from her, and every time it was the same thing:
“Oh, hi, Miles.” With disdain.
“Nice shirt, Miles. Did you not know this was a formal event?” With a brow raised.
And he just grits his teeth and smiles. “Hello, Keiko.”
And it’s every day, every day, until one day he doesn’t see her, and that night he’s putting on his pyjamas and cleaning his teeth and climbing into bed and he can’t quite fall asleep, something’s wrong, something’s missing…
But the next day he sees her as he passes the botany lab. He leans in to wave a hello. She looks up at him and smiles for half a second before frowning. “Aren’t you going to be late for your shift?”
And he falls in love, right there. By slow, repeated, scraping abrasion, Keiko Ishikawa has tunnelled right into his heart.
And who knows. Maybe it’s the same with Julian. Maybe it’s I hate that guy, I hate that guy, over and over he sees him, God damn it, paired on another mission, and then one day Dr. Bashir’s gone off to do something and Miles says to Keiko, “Thank God, at least there’s one day I won’t have to put up with Dr. God’s Gift To Humanity.”
Keiko just smiles. She knows.
And then she gives him shit about something.
After her fantastic guest post on Keiko O’Brien, the wonderful cosmic-llin and I decided to have a chat about Keiko - it ended up spanning everything from her relationship with Miles to her career to what we would have liked to see more of for her, and everything in between. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed having it. :)
thevalkyriedirective: Oh, wow, I googled her to bring up her Memory Alpha article (never know when you need reference or an episode name) and after suggestions like ‘keiko o’brien actress’ or ‘keiko o’brien star trek’ we have ‘keiko o’brien annoying’.
How sad is that?
cosmic-llin: Ugh, that infuriates me. :( Keiko gets so much stick and I can’t work out what the problem is. I think people see her as shrewish because she and Miles fight, but to me it seems like they both give as good as they get.
Also I’ve seen her get hate from Miles/Julian shippers for being in their way, but canonically we’ve seen Keiko actually encourage Miles to spend time with Julian.
thevalkyriedirective: I’ve never been able to figure it out either! She’s labelled the ‘nagging wife’ but I think the problem is that unless she’s a passive, dull, unemotional woman, it doesn’t matter what she does, it’s seen as ‘nagging’ or ‘annoying’.
I’d be pretty pissed off too if I moved to a run down old space station and had to give up my career and raise my daughter there.
But the strangest thing is, she isn’t always nagging or annoying or anything like that - sure she gets exasperated sometimes (it’s called being human! and being in a relationship!) but she’s the one who thinks to set up a school for the kids on the station, she makes the most of a difficult situation!
And as for the Miles/Julian shippers… There were more than a few episodes where she very actively encouraged them to hang out, sometimes even without them realising it.
cosmic-llin: Yeah, I think it’s significant that they’re basically the only married couple we see on a regular basis long-term.
I think if Keiko was in the show just as a cool botanist/teacher, without a connection to Miles, perceptions of her would be different, but because she’s in the box marked “wife”, people interpret her character in certain ways that they wouldn’t otherwise. Any conflict she has with Miles is assumed to be her fault, when actually half the point of the O’Briens was that they were a realistic couple who DID fight sometimes but resolved their differences because they loved each other.
I see a lot of people claim that they fought ALL the time and that Keiko basically never gave Miles a moment’s peace, but actually watching their episodes together that couldn’t be further from the truth.
thevalkyriedirective: You’re absolutely spot on - they’re probably one of the most realistic couples in Star Trek.
15 DAYS OF DS9
DAY 14: Something you wanted to see more of
Since I am an indecisive person, four things I wanted more:
1. More Keiko. Especially, more Keiko with storylines of her own, more Keiko being a botanist in Bajor and having friends and hanging out with the girls of DS9. More Keiko.
2. More Keevan, because besides he being the prettiest Vorta, I think that a Vorta without the feeling of the loyalty to the Founders could have been explored much better than he was.
3. More Garak, because I can never get enough of him.
4. More Kasidy Yates, because she was awesome and just like Keiko, I wanted more adventures of her in her own.

A quiet night at the O’Briens. Keiko is working at the table with some Padds as Miles enters from Molly’s room.
Miles: Molly loves that book Jake gave her. She made me read it three times before she fell asleep.
Keiko smiles distractedly, keeps working. Miles flops down on the couch, looks around for something to do… but can’t think of anything and lets out an unconscious sigh. Keiko looks up.
Keiko: I’m going to be working for another few hours.
Miles picks a PADD off the coffee table, tries to sound enthusiastic.
Miles: That’s okay… I’ll…read…
Keiko: If you want to go do something…
Miles: I’m fine.
Keiko shrugs a smile, gets back to work. A quiet moment… then Miles lets out another unconscious sigh as he reads.
