File this under ‘scenes in NBC Hannibal that are about as subtle as an axe in the head regarding homoeroticism’. In all seriousness, I was rewatching this scene and apart from being vaguely incensed by the notion that whilst Will is fucking Margot Verger he is fantasising about Hannibal and Alana, I also noticed that if you remove Alana from the equation, the cinematography is extremely telling (I’m sorry Alana ily).
Now, this scene already raises certain questions; why the fuck is Will ‘supposedly straight as fuck’ Graham’ fantasising about his male psychiatrist cum cannibalistic serial killer whilst having sex with a beautiful woman being the most prevalent in my mind. Buuuut, in regards to the strategic positioning of both Hannibal/the Wendigo and Will, it could not be more clear that there is some good old homoerotic juju at play here. E.g. Will sees the wendigo (aka a metaphor for his relationship with Hannibal) and immediately begins to climax. He is also seen to be looking up whilst the wendigo faces down, preceding the culmination of Hannibal climaxing followed immediately by Will. Like SERIOUSLY? Could the lines between subtext and text be anymore blurred? I don’t care if Bryan says Hannibal and Will are not at the point of fucking yet, WILL LITERALLY FANTASISED ABOUT A WEIRD THREESOME FT. THE WENDIGO AND ONLY CLIMAXED WHEN HE SAW SAID WENDIGO WHICH IS A FUCKING METAPHOR FOR HIS AND HANNIBAL’S RELATIONSHIP. Ok anyway, I thought I’d share my trashy thoughts on this particular scene.
And the dialogue leading up to the sex is Hannibal saying “You and I went so long in our friendship without ever touching, but I always felt attuned to you” and he’s technically saying it to Alana, but the direction and framing of the scene has it as his voice over a shot of Will’s shirt being removed. All you see if Margot is her hand touching Will, so it’s easy to imagine from the setup and phrasing it’s Hannibal touching Will, which I gotta think is intentional.
I am definitely here for some Will/Wendigo considering what I’ve been up to lately, but this is somehow even better in the script:
Hannibal watching Will intensely while he fucks. Will imagining Hannibal watching him intensely while he fucks. Season 2 is the most homoerotic fever dream and I still can’t believe it exists.
