I had been begging to direct an episode since season one and my chance to collaborate with Michael Westmore on “Genesis” was the best. He should have won an Emmy for his work in that. It was brilliant. I also got to direct one of my favorite scenes with one of my favorite cast members… Spot. That moment when he is behind the couch? Star Trek: the Next Generation - Reg Barclay (my gifs)

Let me tell you about this guy. Lt. Reginald Barclay is my hero. Barclay is anxiety ridden, socially awkward, and self conscious. He has social anxiety disorder, he stutters when nervous or anxious, and he has several severe phobias. Yet he has become an officer of Starfleet and is very intelligent. He overcomes his fears so many times that it gives me hope that I can too. I also relate to him so much because I too have anxiety problems and a fear of social situations. He gives me hope that I can overcome them just like he does. Its hard for him but I’m so damn proud of each time he talks to someone, goes in the transporter, speaks out, or does something he isn’t comfortable with. I also relate to him because he retreated into a fantasy world as a way of calming down just like I always do.
