lol remember that time Abrams said he wouldn’t put an gay character in Star Trek because he didn’t want Star Trek to have an “agenda” (even tho that’s what Star Trek is KNOWN FOR but okay) but now he’s like “Star Wars can have a gay character because you know Star Wars has always been full of possibility” and I’m like okay… but Star Trek’s not? Like, the franchise that was known for pushing the envelope…. the one that says we should all work together to make the world a better place and put aside prejudice… isn’t full of possibility… okay…. like yeah I’m happy for Star Wars but I’m still bitter as fuck and like I’m not about to hop on his dick lmao
abrams is a SHITSTAIN on the history of Star Trek, a fucking DISGRACE to everything that is Star Trek because some piece of shit studio decided apparently that hiring a straight white dude who has no regard for Star Trek is perfect for directing Star Trek, an ENTIRE FRANCHISE that’s been actively dedicated to breaking the norm and pressing social progressiveness what a clusterfuck
it bothers me how much praise i see jj abrams getting right now like honestly go watch the two most recent star trek movies PLEASE do this for me and notice
they whitewashed an iconic character for no reason other than “ooo then people won’t know it’s this character!!” and idk, to be Edgy and get money i guess
(except people figured it out literally as soon as casting was revealed and the cast and crew had to do an entire publicity tour while basically screaming CUMBERBATCH IS NOT KHAN!!! STOP SAYING HE IS!!!)
every female character who is given a speaking role is either shown in her underwear, or killed off
an exception to this is kirk’s mom, who in the first movie is shown giving birth because “it’ll help women connect to the movie!”
uhura, one of the most important black female characters in television and movie history, was reduced to little more than a love interest for spock, despite this never being A Thing in the original series
speaking of: in the reboot, kirk’s apparently a rampant misogynist who hits on every woman he meets, sleeps with women to further his career both academically and otherwise, will grope women he’s just met and laugh about it, and basically all round be a fucking piece of shit
none of which happened in tos, which jj and crew would actually have known had they watched more than, what, five episodes
also there is this article discussing how jj abrams felt about bringing A Gay into star trek
(despite gene roddenberry wanting gay characters involved in the series since before tng)
look, i’m not saying jj is lying about wanting gays in star wars
and i’m not saying he’s only saying it for the money and the publicity
but… please just take a minute to really think about all of this before you blindly praise him and get your hopes up too much
I don’t know when this interview happened but I AM SAD AND ANGRY NOW
The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.
He said Star Trek is too “philosophical”? Screw that noise.
Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.
Also, I don’t think somebody who just flat out said “I don’t like X” should be allowed to make the reboot of “X.” Just on principle. Also, I can’t help thinking that part of why he got away with it is that he’s a man. So he can make a reboot of Star Trek without watching it or liking it and nobody is going to write thinkpieces about how he’s a “fake geek boy.” Nobody’s going to turn him into a meme. Nobody’s going to ask for his credentials. If a woman director of the Trek reboot had said that? Can you imagine?
Why the fuck would you agree to make a movie if you didn’t like the whole point of the original???
This … kind of explains a lot about the reboots, right? I mean, I enjoyed them for what they were, but they did seem more about explosions than … y’know, Star Trek…
