British actor Shazad Latif, who played Dr. Henry Jekyll on Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, is segueing to another genre series, landing a prominent role in Star Trek: Discovery, the upcoming new Star Trek series for CBS All Access, CBS’ live streaming and VOD service.
I hear that Latif is set to play Kol, the Klingon Commanding Officer. There was Kol, Captain of the IKS ‘Avwi, in the Deep Space comics.
Latif joins previously announced Star Trek: Discovery cast members
Doug Jones
as Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer;
Anthony Rapp
as Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer; and
Michelle Yeoh
as Starfleet captain Georgiou.
Star Trek: Discovery, set to premiere in May 2017 on CBS before relocating to CBS All Access, will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions. The series will be distributed by Netflix in 188 countries and by Bell Media in Canada.
Chris Obi and Mary Chieffo have also signed on for key roles in the series: Obi will play T’Kuvma, the Klingon leader seeking to unite the Klingon houses, while Chieffo will portray L’Rell, the Battle Deck Commander of the Klingon ship.
After months of hints, CBS confirmed Tuesday that its new Star Trek series, Star Trek: Discovery, will have an out gay character. Anthony Rapp, most famous as the original Mark in Broadway’s Rent, has been cast as officer and astromycologist Lt. Stamets.
Rapp is himself an out gay man, which makes this casting particularly notable in an industry that still has trouble recognizing
and rewarding LGBTQ actors. But Stamets being one of the new series’
primary characters is important on several different levels — especially
for this franchise. Read more
Star Trek: Discovery launch date pushed back until May at the request of Kurtzman & Fuller.
“Bringing ‘Star Trek’ back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood,” said executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller.
“We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don’t result in compromised quality.
Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: ‘Star Trek’ deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of.”
