I just wanna point out too that medieval handwritten script is stylised and idiomatic enough that it takes substantial study to be able to read it, *especially* to read it cold and off the cuff. For instance this is an example of an Italian notarial document from 1500: 

And notarial handwriting would have been amongst the easiest to read - a private person’s diary would likely be much messier and more difficult.
