You know, one thing that pisses me off about TNG is that they keep giving Cpt. Picard things he deserves and then taking them away.

He’s a stoic, reserved kind of guy and they give him a person or a situation that he deeply connects with and he slowly opens up and reveals himself to be gentle, sweet, a bit shy, strongly caring, devoted, and gripped by a quiet melancholy.

And then the woman or the illusion is ripped away by the end of the episode, rarely lasting more than 3 and he’s left in a self-imposed loneliness again because he doesn’t feel like he should burden his crew with his personal unhappiness, though he does consider many of them to be dear friends and even family.

And that makes me so mad.

On the plus side, they do often show him talking about his problems with Deanna who is trusted and well equipped to help. Showing a man willingly getting help with mental health issues is huge, even today.

I didn’t really pick up on this as a kid.
