Pioneering Black Women | Nichelle Nichols, actress, singer, NASA spokeswoman, and activist

Science is not a boy’s game, it’s not a girl’s game. It’s everyone’s game. It’s about where we are and where we’re going. Space travel benefits us here on Earth. And we ain’t stopped yet. There’s more exploration to come.

Nichelle Nichols portrayed Lt. (later Commander) Uhura for three seasons and six films of Star Trek. Uhura is a character who has had quantifiable importance to our society. She has fans in the space program, the entertainment industry, the White House, and famously includes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Nichelle Nichols went on to use her name recognition from Star Trek in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s efforts to recruit women and minorities for the space shuttle program in the late 1970s and 1980s. Over the span of her long career, Nichols has released albums, written books, headlined stage shows, and charmed at conventions across the world. You can read more about her here.

Rest in peace 💔

Rest in peace Nichelle Nichols, December 28th 1932- July 31st 2022

“Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration.” - nichellenicholsofficial

Today on Things I Didn’t Know existed…..

This video is hilarious.

I just saw on the 2017 documentary “Remembering Leonard Nimoy”, the backstory on this is that Leonard’s stepson had signed Bruno Mars to his record label and then Leonard agreed to be in this music video.

Yay Leonard!

tagged as: i read once that this was the only time nimoy ever appeared as spock in public;  and he only did it once because instead of the hundreds of people he was expecting;  there was a crowd of thousands waiting for the autographs session;  a thing so intense he was afraid people were going to be crushed to death;  so he never did it again;  Star Trek;  TOS cast;  TOS;  Star Trek: TOS;  Leonard Nimoy;  Spock;

Does anyone else get a bit of spiritual contentment out of knowing the extent to which Leonard Nimoy hated Generations and Rick Berman?

thinkin bout him (leonard nimoy)

like… he chased down jack kennedy to demand his cab fare… he paid to see a therapist once a week just to speak to her in yiddish bc he didn’t want to fall out of practice… he defined science fiction television thru a character that nobody thought people would like… he made people like spock thru his sheer dedication to building him up as a genuine and organic character… he did a photography project and released a book of photographs to appreciate fat women’s bodies… he could perform shakespeare in yiddish… he wrote “we are all children / needing and wanting / each other’s / comfort and / understanding / we are all children / searching for love”… he just got it, man, he just understood… i miss him

Leonard Nimoy (March 26, 1931 – February 27, 2015)
“I’m only human, and I have no doubt Spock will outlive me by many years. I can only hope that, once in a while, when people look at Spock’s visage, they might sometimes think of me.”
