Okay, I have finally seen The Handmaiden and I can’t get over how tightly written it is. There is not a drop of ink spilled in the script: everything is there for a reason. The discussion about opium in the beginning of the film. The blue cigarette that isn’t explained until the end. The Count smoking three cigarettes at once in what looks like a sight gag but is about to be hugely plot relevant. Hideko’s Aunt looking weirdly good for someone who supposedly died the way she did. The choppy style of Hideko’s and Sook-hee’s early bonding/romance being because there are literal scenes missing.
