Admiral Janeway had finally been able to schedule a long-awaited visit with the new Cardassian ambassador. He had greeted her with all the formal procedures and offered her a beverage from the replicator, then wandered to look outside of his stateroom making a slight gesture for her to join.
“I take it you’ve gotten used to your new accommodations?”
Garak gestured toward the view of the Paris horizon out of the window of 78 Rue de Lille, complimenting the view as the Admiral sipped her coffee. His nostrils flared at the bitter acid aroma.
“It lives up to all your literary description,” the newly-appointed Ambassador commented. “Though, nothing quite captures modern Human anachronism…”
“Anachronism?” Admiral Janeway’s voice lilted up at the end, sharp and incredulous.
“Ohh, I was plainly referring to the eclectic mix of architecture I saw on the way here. Brilliant glass set against skeletal steel and stately stone. An open and honest history narrated with wide streets and narrow alleyways.”
Kathryn Janeway’s brow furrowed. “’Openness and honesty…’ From what my files tell me those seem to be the last two traits you would praise, Ambassador Garak.”
A smile tugged ever so slightly at the corner of Garak’s lips, and with a raise of his orbital ridges he answered her.
“They are a great help in figuring out where one stands…”
The Admiral took another draft of coffee and nodded.
“I would suppose so.” She responded, her voice clipped, eyes narrowing at the bright afternoon sun.
The Ambassador turned on his heel to start their official proceedings. Most Federation types could be guided by simple talk and verbal feinting. Admiral Janeway was a completely different story.
This conversation was not going to be easy.
