Peter, Fran, and Philippa must have known and dreamt about the scale of this achievement, of what they could achieve. I really do lay claim to being the first on the set who actually was publicly saying, “Guys, we are making a masterpiece. We’re making a film that’s going to be bigger than Star Wars. We’re going to make one of the most successful films of the year, if not the most successful film of the year. And in twenty years’ time when people look back, they’re going to look on our work, and say, “One of my top ten experiences in the cinema of all time.” I still believe that. In fact, I grow more and more convinced of it every day and with every frame that I see of part two and part three.

Celebrating 20 Years of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring dir. Peter Jackson (Dec. 19, 2001)
I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
20 YEARS OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY

It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened?
But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something.
What are we holding on to, Sam?
That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.THE LORD OF THE RINGS (2001 - 2003)
