“Face it, Q,” Picard told him. “You’ve been hanging around humans too much. Your system has not been able to build up proper immunities to us, and we’re becoming contagious. You’re coming down with a terminal case of humanity.”

“Picard,” said Q, with a bit of the old arrogance. “Get some hair. Your brain has caught cold.”

And with a burst of light and sound, he vanished.

“Good riddance,” rumbled Worf.

“Oh, I don’t know,” said Picard slowly. “I hate to admit it… but I’m starting to get used to him.”

“Captain, you’re joking!” Riker said in horror.

Picard turned towards him. “Oh, of course I am, Number One.” But he wasn’t entirely sure that he was.

Picard.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Not only do I LOVE this, but um, I saw this at a used bookstore earlier today (yes, while vainly checking for certain DS9 spin-off novels) and:

TWO OF THE MOST POWERFUL FORCES IN THE UNIVERSE ARE ABOUT TO COLLIDE

(… yeah, I bought it.)

Q-in-Law is genuinely one of the most delightful ST books I’ve ever read.

Okay, but do you know the behind the scenes element of Q-in-Law? Peter David was having issues getting it published, with the studio not sending him any editorial notes on it, effectively turning him down, so he went direct to Majel Barrett at a convention. She asked to read the manuscript, and proceeded to go to the Paramount offices, GUSHING about it. Within days, he got the comments from the office.

Also the audiobook version actually has Majel Barrett AND John de Lancie reading it.Ā

Seriously, if you’re a Trek fan, you can’t go wrong with this book.

I own this, and it is great. And I hadn’t heard the last bit. Wonderful.

can we talk about how in the motion picture novelisation kirk was literally asked “are you and spock fucking” and instead of just saying “haha nah we’re just friends :)” he went on a paragraph-long weird-ass ramble about spock’s refusal to address to those rumours, the nature of love vs gratification, completely avoids answering the question or even, like addressing it, and uses blatantly comparative language to describe sex with women indicating that he also has sex with people who aren’t women

all I can see is kirk going back to spock like “I PANICKED” and spock with his head in his hands like “…that is evident”

about spock’s refusal to address those rumors - isn’t it a canonical thing that vulcans can’t or at least really try not to lie under any circumstances ever

all im saying is could he have addressed them

kirk: hang on, people asked you about those rumours all the time, did you lie?

angryqueershakespeare:

and I swear to god I’m not making this up, I’m 100% serious

the DS9 story (A Gutted World) opens with Garak convincing Damar that his collection of illicit engineering materials is solely to make a super kinky sex toy under the radar for his “friend”

and Damar asks Garak to show him the materials and prove it, and Garak lays all the parts out, and Damar is like, yeah, I think that’s a sex toy, Garak you’re so fucking weird and Garak’s just like lol yeah I know, it’s great!

I COULD NOT MAKE THIS UP IF I TRIED

"I know that we have grown apart and that’s as it should be. We learn what we can from certain people, then we move on after we’ve taken what we need. If he thinks the fear of alienating a few closed-minded readers is going to stop me from writing stories that feature and promote characters of diverse backgrounds— including LGBTQ characters, persons of color, and people who belong to ideological or philosophical minorities — he must be out of his mind.

I’m a fucking Star Trek writer.

Those of us who write the licensed Trek fiction continue to do our best to depict a more progressive, enlightened, open, and harmonious future, not just for humanity but for all sentient beings.

I will never be made to feel shame for doing this. I am proud that we’ve been able to do this.

Whenever someone asks ‘why do we need to keep talking about embracing diversity in stories, and seeking out diversity in the authors and creators and portrayers of speculative fiction?’, I will say it’s because too many authors and artists and filmmakers still get letters like this one.

We need to work toward a better future in which no one would even *think* of writing an e-mail like this.

But what I have been learning about myself… whatever it was inside me that was sparked and challenged when I first met you… is deeply connected to this story. I’m an unfinished man, Doctor, like a suit of clothes hanging on a display rack waiting for the final touches that may never come; I need to tell this story to make a peace with those parts of me that were left unfinished. A healing. Indulge me, if you will; I need you as a witness.

I’m not sure how much longer I can keep away from him – I mean, keep him distracted.“

Picard had to wonder just how willingly Q had consented to play decoy. Was he voluntarily luring 0 away from the bridge, or was he merely putting a self-serving face on circumstances he was helpless to prevent? "What do you mean?” Picard asked. “What do you need us to do?”

“How should I know?” Q said impatiently. “You’re the ones who specialize in triumphing against overwhelming odds. Have Data whip up some technobabble. Tell Counselor Troi to get in touch with her feelings. Let Riker punch someone.
