this is a very interesting episode - i think this season, overall, managed to hide very well the alarming fact that Picard has a terminal illness and will likely soon die, so it felt like a punch to being reminded of this at the beginning. The crew was so taken aback and Raffi was so sad :(
the synth planet… i still have to think it over what i think, but very cool concepts all around. Sutra is a pretty interesting character - a cunning, ruthless android and her whole look is amazing. if Soji and Dahj seems to be very much Data’s daughters, Sutra looks like she would be better suited being like. Lore’s daughter
So i figured i would put up a post with all the new information we have found out so far about the Troi-Riker family since we last saw them in Nemesis.
We know that Deanna and Will married in 2379 before going to live on the Titan.
Deanna says that Thad (or full name Thaddeus Troi-Riker, named after one of Will’s ancestor during the civil war era) would have turned 18 years old a week before the recent episode took place. PIC takes place in 2399, this means that Thad was born 2 years after Deanna and Will’s marriage in 2381.
According to showrunner Michael Chabon’s instagram posts, Thad died around 15 years old, which means his passing was 3 years ago in 2396. And Chabon also stated that by the time of Thad’s death, the family had been living on Nepenthe for 5 years, this means that they got Thad’s diagnosis and left Starfleet in the year 2391.
Deanna says that Thad’s illness could have been cured theoretically if the synth ban wasn’t in effect. The attack on Mars happened in 2385, when Thad was 4 years old, and that’s 6 years before Thad’s diagnosis, so it makes sense that if synth ban had been in effect for 6 years already by the time Thad’s diagnosis came around, that there were no positronic matrices anymore.
Will and Deanna are both on “active reserve” status, meaning that if they were to return to Starfleet, they will both return to the same rank as when they left, Will would be captain, and Deanna would be commander. This is further clarified by numerous posts from Michael Chabon.
Thad’s talent for inventing new worlds and languages is something taken from his mother. Lwaxana Troi mentions in the TNG episode “Dark Page” that Deanna had a talent for languages as a child. Thad created at least 12 languages, including one for butterflies. Michael Chabon states on his instagram stories that there were more backstory of the family that they hadn’t included into the script and we can see more details about Thad’s imaginary home world creation.
There has been no stated dates for Kestra’s birth. Kestra is of course named after Deanna’s deceased older sister who had drowned in an accident when Deanna was just a baby. Lwaxana was so distraught that she repressed all memories of Kestra and forbid the mention of her name so Deanna didn’t learn about her sister until she was an adult, this is shown in the same episode I mentioned before, Dark Page, during TNG’s 7th season.
My assumption of Kestra’s age is likely to be 13 years old in 2399. This episode was filmed in fall of 2019, around August, and actress Lulu Wilson, who was born in October of 2005 would have been just about two months shy of turning 14, so at the time of filming she was still 13. This would likely mean that Kestra is about 5 years younger than Thad, meaning that if Thad passed away around 15, then Kestra was at least 10 years old when her brother died. This makes sense as Kestra would have been old enough by then to have clear memories of her brother and to comprehend and feel his absence, hence leading to her own words to Soji where she recognizes that something bad happened to her and that her parents helped her through it. And this also fits in with Deanna saying to Picard that Kestra still aches for her brother. If she had been too young, she wouldn’t have felt his absence as much, but with her being at least 10 years old, she would have had more concrete memories of Thad and their time together to know what loss and death is.
Michael Chabon also commented on his instagram stories that Kestra has somewhat higher than average empathy for a human being, while Thad may have inherited more of Deanna’s Betazoid ability.
Michael Chabon also reveals that the shirt that Kestra wears with Klingon on it basically translates to “Sex Phasers”, a more than likely nod to the Sex Pistols.
Another insight provided by Michael Chabon was regarding Kestra’s education on Nepenthe. She is home-schooled, but there are other enrichment programs on Nepenthe for her to do so that she can interact with other kids her age.
Thad’s room also has a poster that marks a music festival in 2395, a year before his death.
And from what I can glimpse in Thad’s room, he has long bows, compound bows, arrows, and quivers, as well as maps and cartography books all over his room. There is also one Archery trophy next to the photo of baby Thad with Picard, and on it says what I can make out to be Best Archer 2393, from when he was 12 years old. Kestra doing archery and dressing up as a “viveen, wild girl of the woods” is an homage to her brother.
Michael Chabon also confirms that the music that Riker was listening to when we first saw him cooking in the house.
Now my assumption is that Picard did see the Troi-Riker family at least 3 years ago when Thad died, because Picard is not surprised or shocked about Thad’s death, which means he knew about it. And I can’t imagine that if he knew, that he wouldn’t go to be with them.

2379 - Will and Deanna gets married, leaves the Enterprise E and joins the Titan
2381 - Thaddeus “Thad” Troi-Riker was born
2385 - Attack on Mars and synth ban started
2385-2387(/?) - time period of when Kestra Troi-Riker was possibly born
2387 - Romulus is destroyed
2391 - Thad is diagnosed with mendaxic neurosclerosis, Will and Deanna leaves Starfleet and goes into “active reserve” status, and move their family to Nepenthe
2395 - Freecloud Music Festival 2395 poster shown on Thad’s wall
2396 - Thad passes away
2399 - Picard arrives at Nepenthe with Soji
