Sansa sat up. “Lady,” she whispered. For a moment it was as if the direwolf was there in the room, looking at her with those golden eyes, sad and knowing. She had been dreaming, she realized. Lady was with her, and they were running together, and … and … trying to remember was like trying to catch the rain with her fingers. The dream faded, and Lady was dead again.
Summer’s howls were long and sad, full of grief and longing. Shaggydog’s were more savage. Their voices echoed through the yards and halls until the castle rang and it seemed as though some very pack of direwolves haunted Winterfell, instead of only two… two where they had once been six. Do they miss their brothers and sisters too? Bran wondered. Are they calling to Grey Wind and Ghost, to Nymeria and Lady’s Shade? Do they want them to come home and be a pack together? - A Clash of Kings, Chapter 4, Bran I
A DIREWOLFis a close relative of the wolf, but larger and stronger. They are named after the real world direwolves, Pleistocene megafauna, which were larger than modern wolves (but not as large as portrayed in the books). Direwolves are extinct north of the wall, as they are a very large and dangerous predator, and people have probably hunted them out. A grey direwolf in a white field is the sigil of House Stark.(requested by direwolfrising & daenelicious)
